Classes are in Dutch and English. Coaches are proficient in both languages and will guide kids in both languages. Jim classes are a fantastic way to learn both Dutch and English!
To make sure classes are safe and the coach can give each child enough attention, studios can accommodate a maximum of 15 children. Explorer classes are an exception to this rule because parents also participate. The maximum for Explorer classes is therefore 10 children.
The physical literacy framework is used to teach key movement and motor skills that are developmentally appropriate. Each class focuses on a specific skill that aligns to one of our characters. For example, with Floaty, we could learn coordination. This includes balance, catching, throwing, and sliding. Classes for children 4-5 alternate every few weeks between a core movement skill and a targeted skill (like dance or ball skills). A coach provides targeted feedback and can give extra challenges or provide additional support based on the child’s ability and needs.
Coaches all come from movement, dance, or sports backgrounds. Through their formal training in school, they have the technical training and essential skills to teach motor skills to children. All coaches have had a background check and gone through training to learn all about the Jim approach, curriculum, and class model.
New friends are always welcome! It is, however, important, for everyone to register for safety/organizational reasons. Please share our information with other parents and make sure they register as well! Younger/older siblings are welcome to come to the lounge but because the classes are focused on age-appropriate skills and there’s a limited number of spots, all children must be registered and fit the age group to participate in the class. There’s a play area in the lounge that everyone is welcome to use!
The Jim studio is closed on Public holidays. For members, these classes can be made up one week prior or one week after the Public holiday. During school holidays, classes run regularly.
Indeed! We know schedules and commitments change. Please contact our studio or stop in to find a new time that works.
You absolutely can! Please contact us by 17:00 the day before the class. You can schedule an alternative class up to 7 days before or 7 days after the original date of the class. When your child doesn’t show up for class without contacting us, you will lose your right to schedule a makeup class.
Please make sure your child is in comfortable clothes to move! They will go barefoot so no need to wear special shoes.
The studio is located in Amsterdam Zuid. Come say hello at Bartholomeus Ruloffsstraat 9, 1071WJ, Amsterdam, NL.
Classes come to life in Jim’s magical and playful studios. Two unique spaces are available for children to explore and move through: Playscape and Lightscape. Playscape holds classes for children ages 2-5. The innovative equipment and play structures create opportunities for new adventures and explorations. The Lightscape studio is children ages 3-5. There are wall to floor projections that bring the story to life and immerse children in a magical world.
After much research with the design and development team, it was determined that the technology and projections are most developmentally appropriate for children starting at age 3. Kids need to be able to think symbolically and have the ability to transfer fantasy to reality with the projections. After much testing, the Playscape studio has been deemed most appropriate for younger age groups (age 2).
The Jim studio isn’t just for kids! A working space with free WiFi and relaxation lounge is available for adults. Unwind, socialize, and watch your children have fun in class. The coffee is complimentary! For the 2-3 age group class in the Playscape, parent participation is required.
We sure do! We love a good celebration and we love to do the clean up for you! Click here to schedule a party.
Jim programs are based on the concept of physical literacy. Physical literacy is the development of foundational motor skills that children need to become active for life. It is the practice of developing confident children who will have the knowledge and skills to participate in a wide range of physical activities.
The studio was designed by Amsterdam-based design studio Tank (A’DAM Toren, OBA, Pontsteiger). The goal was to create an environment that sparked curiosity and imagination for children and welcomed parents to make them feel at home. Unlimited coffee, comfortable, spacious seating in the lounge, and glass walls for ease of viewing makes for an equally enjoyable experience for parents.
The Jim Family guides children through their classes by using a unique, story-based format to teach movement skills. Each character embodies and illustrates one of five key movement skills that are part of the physical literacy concept. The Jim family will support and inspire your child to become a lifelong mover. Meet Floaty, Strong, Fast, Bendy, and the Bounce twins!
By teaching movement in a narrative format, children are more invested and interested. The stories create a jumping off point to encourage children to be creative and think critically. The studio becomes a safe space to explore and try new things. The characters become movement role models that inspire children to be strong, flexible, and coordinated. And after all, who doesn’t love to travel to a magical world?
Wall and floor projections are used to display animated stories. These are coupled with a grid of remote-controlled LED floor lights that shift into various exercise configurations. The programming team works closely with animators from Amsterdam-based animation studio Mookx to bring the Jim characters and stories to life.
Nope. There are no funny glasses here! Instead, your child’s imagination is stimulated with a little help from a coach and Jim’s animated stories. In the Lightscape studio, LED floor lights become a waves to surf, rocks to jump over or paths to follow.
Jim stands for Joy In Motion. That’s what we hope every child takes away from participating in Jim class.
